Catherine Smith- Italian Nurse
My name is Catherine Smith. I am a front line nurse. I live in Bologna, Italy. I was born in 1900. I had a boyfriend but he died in the war in 1917. My brother was also very badly injured in the western front.
December 8 Our army just had to go to war. Not because we did anything but because Serbia had to go and kill our alliances, Austria-Hungary’s archduke, Franz Ferdinand because of some nationalism reasons or something. We didn't get involved right away but they asked us to join alliances with them, so we did. We couldn't afford ( being such a tiny nation) to be forced into war without someone (whose very powerful) on our side.
December 11 World War One has been occurring for 1 year and about six months now. I just got recruited into the war as a frontline nurse. I’m not going to lie, I’m very scared. I realize that I’m not actually in the war, but just the thought of taking care of people who could die in my hands is a VERY scary thought.I’m getting ready to go out to the field to take care of some guys with severed legs (I’m very nervous).
Smack talk:
Serbia needs to lay off and not have so much anger. It's so stupid that they would kill someone that really did nothing to them. I think they were just looking for trouble. Every single day I come to take care of these poor men that are here fighting for their countries (which their countries did nothing at all). Some wounded, some die sudden death from a bomb strike, some just brutally murdered and suffer for nothing. Think next time Serbia before you go and do something stupid again.
December 15 My battle plan would be to use a lot of machine guns for easy and fast kill, and tanks for front line easy action, and then artillery back a little ways and above. We may not be a really strong army but at least we have strong allies. We seem to lean on out allies quite a bit but they have our backs and we have theres. Blog: I personally think it’s idiotic that they would kill him for such a dumb reason. That’s just asking for something bad to happen. So were stuck in the middle of something that we had no control over. But we joined alliances and we must protect our allies. We may not be strong but they could use as much help as they can find to get the war evened out between countries.
December 20 In this poster two men are hiding behind some kind of tree. This propaganda poster is about recruting Italians to war. It uses emotional appeal, and emotional symbols.

A couple days ago I took care of some severely wounded guys and little did I know I was going out there to sew my own brother’s leg back on. I had never felt so queasy in my entire life. He didn’t even recognize me at first. I actually didn’t recognize him either until I cleared the blood, sweat, and tears from his dirty face. Neither of us could stop crying. It was a mixture of happiness and sadness I think. I was happy because my brother was actually alive and I thought he passed away awhile because I hadn’t heard from him in a long long time. I was sad though only because it was the first time I had seen him in 2 years.

Russias exit to the war was very possitive on my side ( the Italian side) because they took there troops out and made it easier for us to defend our country against France.
The United States entry to the war was a negative thing on my side along with everyones side because the U.S was an independent nation and they weren't on anyones side and being such a strong army they could take anyone out in no time.

Italy was not very happy with the out come of the Treaty of Versailles because nothing went Italy's way. They didn't gain any of the land promised. We're already very unhappy because were such a small country and we lost about 600,000 men.

Personally i'm exstatic to finally be home. Even though I lost the love of my life in that pointless war and saw my brother brutally injured there. I loved seeing my family again after being on the frontlines of war for so long. I almost forgot what being home was like. Honestly, I know its going to take me an awful long time to ajust back to the normal run of things. But, i'm just so jubilant to be home finally!!!
